Hilary and Jackie is based on Piers and Hilary Du Pre’s memoir A Genius in the Family, chronicling the life and career of their sister and famous cellist Jacqueline Du Pre.
The two sisters grow up being taught their respective instruments, Hilary the flute and Jacqueline the cello. Despite early promise, Hilary is quickly dwarfed by her sister’s prestigious talent which leads to international prominence and marries the pianist and composer Daniel Barenboim. Hilary also gets married, to Christopher ‘Kiffer’ Finzi. As the films studies the relationship between the sisters, we see their dedication to one another. Hilary ultimately consents to an affair between her husband and her sister to facilitate Jackie’s recovery from a nervous breakdown.
David played Christopher ‘Kiffer’ Kinzi. Son of renowned composer Gerald Finzi, Kiffer marries Hilary Du Pre and become sinvolved with her sister Jacqueline as she recovers from a breakdown.
